NorCal Voyagers Club
Sacramento Jazz Jubillee
It was 11:55 am on May 25th when I left Fresno to meet up with John Adkins; we were going to have Lunch in Merced before heading on up to Sacramento for our monthly event, this time it was a Jazz Jubilee to be held in Old Town Sacramento.  John & I were camping out at the West Sacramento KOA, I had notified all our members we would be there, And we had expected to meet up with all the members who were coming to the jubilee.  John brought some fishing gear with him and since we were camped about 80 feet from the river we decided to go fishing, But first things first. It was now around 6:30 PM and it had been a whole 5 hours since we had eaten lunch, So the natural thing to do, it seemed was to fill our bellies first and than go fishing, After dinner we scrounged up some night crawlers & chicken liver for bait, than we headed for the river bank, It didn’t take long for John to catch his first fish, a mud cat about 5” long. We fished for a little over an hour, John caught three fish and every time he brought one in it was smaller than the one before, I caught one and if we really knew the truth, I would bet money it was one of the one’s John threw away, We decided we were wasting our time and made the decision to turn in for the night. It was very noisy there all night long, we were also only a hundred yards or so from the FWY, Sleep finely over came the noise and I drifted of into never never land.

I pulled myself out of the bed at 0600 and lit the fire under the coffeepot, I was on my second cup when John came crawling out with cup in hand, and we had several cups of coffee and some sweet rolls John had bought the night before. We had a few hours to kill before the jazz jubilee got into full swing, So we decided to go fishing again, John caught one of his rejects from the night before, We were hoping some of the members  would show up so we could have some one to lie too about the size of John’s fish.  I did forget to tell you that Duane Stark was at the camp ground when we arrived, we had a nice little visit with him, and when we decided to have dinner he headed for home.We waited around the camp for someone to show up, but no one did by 11:00 so we decided to go it alone.

When we arrived in old town, the traffic was horrible and I could just see us parking 2 miles away and walking back to Don & Doris’s hotel, They were staying at the Holiday Inn and we were supposed to pick up a key at the desk, give them a call and than wait in their room.  We circled around three or four blocks until I found the entrance to the hotel parking lot, There was a sign that said parking was $8.00 a day, we were both reaching for our money when we got to the gate, But the attendant told us motorcycles parked free and directed us to the M/C parking area. (What luck).  When we arrived at the desk and picked up the key we went right up to the room, We didn’t expect anyone to be there, but to our surprise we found Doris laying on the bed, She jumped up and gave both of us a big hug, we talked for a little while, than she had to show us her scar, which I took a picture of.  Doris took us to the Firehouse parking area where they were stationed for the duration of the jubilee, There we met Don, Rex & Dannette, After some big hugs and some bone cracking hand shakes they sat us down in their dough out and we all got caught up on the latest gossip and happenings in our areas.

Don & Doris scrounged up a couple volunteer ribbons for us, which meant we got into the jubilee free plus we had as much free liquids as we could drink, (including beer & the hard stuff). We went on a tour of the jubilee and saw probably about half of the events that were taking place in the area.  We could see that Doris was getting very tired, although she denied it very strongly, we knew the only way to get her to rest was for us to go back to camp, and take a nap ourselves, We had to promise her we would come back later on in the evening, which we did.  We stayed until after dark, we got to see the girls get all lit up, what a sight that was, I have never seen anyone with that many lights on them at one time, They weren’t really lights, They were little tubes in different lengths, you break the seal inside them and they glow in the dark, very neat especially for an old Okie boy like me that’s never been to town before.  John and I were going to stay until Monday, but when we saw how weak Doris was we decided to head on home so she would at least get some rest before she croaked on us.

I would say we had a nice time over all, It would have been a lot nicer if some more of the members had shown up, Oh well maybe we will have a better showing in June at lake Tahoe, Not everyone likes jazz you know.  John and I made a very nice and uneventful trip back home, with a 35-mile per hour tail wind.  Don is supposed to supply some pictures to go along with this short story, if you don’t see them than call Don & get on his case. Cheers.

For more information about hotels and camping please check back as I have not yet been provided any of that info.  More info about the Jazz Jubilee itself can be found here http://www.sacjazz.com/ .  Here is some ticket info for the Jazz Jubilee. For More info contact Don Brubaker at machii@jps.net .  I will post more info as Don provides it to me.
This site has some good info on campsites and hotels. Be aware that most of the no-tell/motels are sold out. Dennett and Rex got their room five months ago and they are still paying $80 dollars.  http://www.adventur.com/sacramen/rvcamping.htm

I was able to get half day discount tickets for our club for Saturday evening, the best nite I might ad, for the price of $13.60.  As u know, these normally sell for $25.00. The  tickets will be given to me for sale to  NorCal / AVA / ?.  With these tickets, you will be able to take free buses to any where we have a venue, including Cal/Expo. The site I manage is the "Fire House Lot" which normally is the parking lot for the Fire House restaurant. This is in Old Sac. on L street between Front and Second streets. I have included a small map of the area for reference. You can call my cell # (916) 296-9109  or Doris's cell # (916) 806-1932 for directions also. After getting there, just ask the person on the gate for Don or Doris Brubaker or a site manager. I will be informing my crews and their supervisors of whats going on so there should be no confusion.
