Bobby arrived
at 11:30 ready to go, I gathered myself up and we headed out. We were to meet
Wayne Bright at Klines truck stop @ 12:15, we arrived right on time, but Wayne
hadn't arrived yet, we didn't have to wait very long for him.
I was ready to hit the road but Wayne and Bobby wanted to take some pictures,
so we posed for each other for three or four photo shots, than we mounted
up and headed North. We went up hwy 99 as far as Stockton, than we cut over
to I-5 on hwy 4.
Wayne was running low on fuel so we stopped in Stockton for him and Bobby to take on fuel, than we headed north again It was getting pretty hot so I decided to do a pit stop at flag city, (hwy12) we had a bite to eat & drink at the Taco Bell, and headed north again.
It was getting around 3:30 when we left Flag City, and I figured we would have some heavy traffic going through Sacramento, but we breezed right through and arrived in Dunnigan around 5:oopm and checked into our motel rooms.
Wayne & I both brought swim trunks so we could go swimming, I checked out the pool and decided it was too dirty to swim in, so we just had a six pack of Millers and sit in Wayne's room and drank it.
Everybody did their husbandly duty and checked in with our wives as we were told to do before we left home. Than we decided to walk over and have dinner, they had corned beef & cabbage on special so we all three ordered CB&C, it was pretty good, but a little on the dry side, but it filled the void.
Wayne said good night at about 9:00 and Bobby kept me awake until after 10:00 telling me stories of his past adventures, when I got so sleepy I couldn't stay awake any longer, I told him good night and drifted off into never never land.
I had asked the office to give us a call at 0530, when the phone rang, Bobby was headed for the shower, I looked over at the clock and saw it was only 4:15am, I called the desk and asked them why they called me at 4:15, she said she didn't call me and the machine was set to call me at 5:30, so I must have been dreaming.
Bobby heard it ring too since he was up and headed for the bathroom when it rang, so we know we were not dreaming, we figured someone called a room to wake someone up and they hit the wrong number, anyway we didn't get to go back to sleep.
I called Wayne at 5:30 so he could enjoy some of this early call stuff too. We were almost ready to go when Arnie & Shari Johnson arrived, they had to come in their car since his stator went out on his 1300.
We were all ready to leave except for fuel, so we drove over to the local fuel stop and topped off our tanks, we had decided to wait and have breakfast around 10:30 some where along the way.
We took the
previously designated route up to the park entrance, we had to make an emergency
pit stop at a campground, and we were all about to burst.
While there we asked the host where we could have a decent breakfast,
he gave us the name of a place about 6 miles up the road, in fact it was the
only place between the camp grounds and the south gate to get something to
eat at.
We stopped and all of us ordered our breakfast. It was very good and quite filling too.
We were supposed to meet Larry & Lacy Kinser of the (Golden State Riders Club) at the south gate around 12:15, we were just starting to get mounted up when they rode past, so we waited for them to return, the introductions were made to all and we headed to the south gate of the park.
When we arrived
at the gate, Bobby bought himself a golden age pass, those of us that had
passes showed them, those that were too young had to fork over some greenbacks.
I had noticed that I was getting very light headed and a little dizzy,
this had happened to me on Thursday also, so I decided it should be looked
into and I asked the lady at the gate if they had any medical facilities on
the park grounds, she said no.
I knew when I asked that question I was in for trouble, they asked me what was wrong and when I told them, they made me park my bike and they called a ranger who was a retired Navy corpsman.
It took him about 20 minutes to get there, I figured it was either my blood pressure or possibly a minor ear infection, he checked me out and my B/P was up somewhat but not high enough to cause dizziness.
Since we didn't know what the problem was, he informed me I couldn't ride my bike in the park as long as I was dizzy. I didn't know just what to do about this, but after some small talk and a little forethought I decided I could ride with Shari, and Arnie could ride my bike, when I asked him if he would ride the bike, his face lit up like a little kid in a candy store, he was one happy camper.
We made it through the park with no other problems, although we did miss some of the attractions due to some road closures and construction on same, Oh yes we found out my problem was dehydration, so after drinking about a gallon of water I was as good as new.
If you ever go through the park make sure you go through the museum just inside the North entrance, it has some fascinating photographs, especially for the time period they were taken in.
We arrived in Burney about 5:30, check into our motels and went to dinner at a pretty nice steak house, and the food was very good.
After dinner we went back to the motel and sat around for a while talking over the day's events. Arnie & Shari were camping out at Burney falls camp grounds, we tried to get them to stay with us, Wayne had two rooms with three beds in them, but they said they wanted to camp so we had to let them go.
It was decided
Friday night that we would meet there at the motel and just walk across the
street for breakfast, when everyone was there, we headed on across the street,
everyone ordered what they wanted, than I found out that Larry & Lacy
had already eaten, but they did sit with us and joined in on the conversation,
which was loud until the food arrived, than it got almost deathly quite.
The quietness didn't last long though, Bobby had some more stories’ he
wanted to tell and he told them until his food was to cold to eat.
We loaded up and headed for Burney Falls, we were there for about two hours, it's a very beautiful place, but should really be seen in the spring when the snow has started melting real good. We walked around for quite a while and Wayne & Bobby took a whole bunch of pictures, and so did Larry.
Everybody had taken in all they could see and took pictures of everything that didn't move and some of things that did move, we decided it was time to hit the trail again.
Larry & Lacy had decided they would go back to the park and do some rock climbing.
I almost forgot Lacy is Larry's daughter, and he just bought her a new Honda 250 Hawk, so pretty soon she will be out riding with us all the time.
The rest of us went on over to Fall River Mills, where the Russell seat factory used to be. The new owner told me, that Don had died and his wife ran the business for a while, but decided it was too much for her, so she sold it. They are now in Shasta Lake City, I should have an address for them pretty soon, but their 1-800 number is still good if you want to call them.
Arnie and Shari left us in Fall River Mills at my suggestion, they were going to spend the night in Anderson Ca, and I decided they should get out of there while they still had time, since there wasn't really anything to see between F RM and Susanville, so they departed and went on their way.
We arrived in Susanville around 5:30, checked into our motel, unpacked our gear and relaxed for about an hour, than we went to dinner, Bobby & I decided we would eat light this night so we ordered a chef's salad, I can't remember what Wayne had. The food arrived and it looked like they had brought us the horse trough, They messed Bobby's order up and made him a grilled chicken salad, which he accepted and I might add ate every bite of it.
We said good
night to Wayne at about 8:30pm, and we watched the news for a little while,
then Bobby decided he had some more story's he wanted to tell, so I stalled
him while I took a shower, than I let him talk me to sleep.
We got up at 5:30 the next morning had breakfast, Bobby said he was going
to eat light again this morning, since he wasn't hungry anyway, Wayne and
I ordered a senior omelet and Bobby ordered a stack (pancakes) when he got
them we almost died, there were three of them and they were all at least 10"
Dai and 3/4" thick plus they had blueberry's on them, that sucker ate 2&1/2
of them.
After breakfast we loaded up and headed out for the Feather river Canyon, The ride was very nice, not much traffic and it was a little cooler riding along the river bed, we arrived in Orville around noon, but we didn't stop there, but we did have an ice cream a little south of Marysville.
We stopped at Flag City again for fuel and a bite to eat, I had a salad, Wayne had a burger, and Bobby only had a glass of lemonade, Must have been full of pancakes.
We left Flag City at 3:15pm and our next stop was the turlock rest stop, man was it getting hot, but I was drinking my water like I was supposed too.
We left the
rest stop after about a 30 minute rest and burned the hwy up for the next
hour and a half, we got into Fresno somewhere around 5:30pm. Man did that
cool shower feel good, here it is Wednesday and I haven't heard a word from
Wayne or Bobby, gosh I hope they are OK.
I did hear from Arnie & Shari, they made it home just fine, and Larry
& Lacy got home on Monday, Larry said Lacy got to hot and became sick
on him, so they spent Sunday night in a motel. Very smart thing to do; we
don't want any heat strokes out there.
That about
covers the whole thing, I'm sure I left some things out, and if I did then
someone else can write the ride up with their version of the events.
Don't forget we have the camp out at the Columbia State Park Rock Quarry
later this month, I think it's the 23rd through the 25th, and then in September
we have the camp out in Monterey at the Vets Park, Sept 27 through 29.
I will go over on the 26th and procure the campsites; I will need
to know how many plan to attend, so I will know how many sites to get
