Campout in San Simeon

The Club event was located at the San Simeon Campground on Highway 1, which is located just south of the town of Sam Simeon and Hearst Castle. For a quickly put together impromptu Club event, the turn out was quite good. The campout consisted of six members and two guests. On Saturday, Don Brewbaker, Bill Owens and Bob Joyner rode over to Highway 101, then on up to Greenfield where they met up with President, Ray Walls, Fred Andrew and Larry Kirkes, bringing the total event attendance to 11.

Bob led the way over Carmel Valley Road to a great restaurant located in Carmel Village for lunch. For those of you that have not been on Carmel Valley Road, it is a beautiful two lane, sometimes one lane road that winds it’s way over the mountains to the Monterey coast line. It is perfect for the motorcyclist who likes the “twisties”.

After lunch, Larry had to make his way back home, but Ray and Fred decided to take full advantage of the beautiful weather and ride down the coast line back to San Simeon with Don, Bill and Bob. Traffic was light for a Saturday and Highway 1 from Monterey to San Simeon can be one of the most beautiful rides in California. Scenery includes Carmel, Big Sur, Pacific Valley, the Pideras Blanca’s point light house and Hearst Castle.

Ray and Fred stopped by the camp site for a cup of coffee and sat around the camp fire until almost dark. I don’t think they wanted to leave! Anyway, it was a fantastic day of riding, sight seeing and overall camaraderie.

On Sunday, Don, Bill and Bob went on another ride into Cambria to look at “Nit Wit Ridge”. This is a house built entirely of junk. It was built on a hillside by one man who worked on it for over 51 years. He used everything from beer cans to automobile parts to rocks and abalone shells. He first started building the house in 1928. The house was featured on the TV show California Gold and is well worth a side trip to see. It was designated a California Landmark in the late 1980’s. The house is still owned by the family and tours are available.

After leaving Cambria, the trio rode into Morro Bay and out to famous Morro Rock. The ride continued up the coast to Cayucos, then turned inland and went up Old Creek Road, a road which Don and Bill fell in love with. The ride continued through Templeton, lunch in Atascadero, a ride over Highway 41 then back up Highway 1 to the campground.

Sunday night we were joined by two new friends who rode in on BMW’s. They were on a roundabout ride to Death Valley. They told us this was a shake down ride for a future trip to Alaska. One fellow was from Seattle, WA. and the other from Hamilton, Montana. They joined us around the camp fire and all enjoyed a relaxing evening. Monday was another beautiful day, but everyone had to pack up and head home.
